While not every discipline uses the term "reflection" students are often asked to reflect. For example, reflection can be on a process used to achieve an outcome. It can be on applying knowledge gained in a course to another course or to another topic. It can be on evaluating what one has learned and how they see the acquired skill(s) impacting their other courses, work, life.
This metacognition (thinking about thinking) deepens our understanding and enriches our learning. In addition, understanding how you arrived at certain outcomes demonstrates to future employers and schools what was actually learned from experiences.
Reflections help you to make connections between your courses, academic program, professional career, and personal lives
- You learn better when you write about it.
- Your knowledge transfer between courses, as well as between academic experiences and lived experiences.
- Your learning becomes REAL as connections are made.
Reflections should be about your work , your progress, and your growth. For meaningful reflection, SHOW rather than simply TELL.
