11. A knowledge of contemporary issues in professional practice
Current Practices and Issues
It is important to stay up on current practices and issues in the world of engineering. I am signed up for The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) email list and receive engineering news daily. Staying in the loop of what is going on in the engineering world is so important due to the advancing technologies being developed and tested. If other engineers have tried methods that seem to be failing, I myself as a practicing engineer may choose to steer clear of that method. It works in the other direction as well. If I see that a certain method is being used a lot as seems to be looking, I may do some more research on the method and see if it would be of good use. The importance of current issues has also been expressed in the classroom in the form of literary reviews and research projects on current events.
