9. The broad education necessary to understand the impact of engineering solutions in a global and societal context.
A broad education across many fields of study can increase the professional awareness and performance of a practicing engineer. For example, an engineer who has had a narrow education and only knows the technical skills learned from engineering classes may create a design that looks perfect on paper. However, since they did not educate themselves on the practical uses and the desires of the public, their design was not carried out.
Luckily at UAA, engineering students take several general education requirements to open their view of the world and think about issues in more than just one perspective. In order for engineers to excel and be efficient in their roles, education in multiple areas of study is highly recommended. The more we educate ourselves about the roles of the people we work, the more well-oiled of a machine the industry will become.
