One of the greatest gifts God has given us as human beings is the gift of free will. Without free will, we wouldn't have any control over our lives.  Because of our free will, we are able to choose to help others.  We are able to perform good works and love others with our whole hearts.  Without free will, love wouldn't be possible.  It is our free will that makes us who we are, sets up apart from all other living things.  For we are the only creatures that have been blessed with the ability to reach theosis (union with God.)

It may seem like a huge responsibility that we are given so much power and authority, and it is.  Making the right decisions can be stressful at times, there is no doubt about it.  Accordingly, theosis is not something that can happen overnight, it is a lifelong goal and something we must work our entire lives to approach.  Living a life of prayer, fasting, and attending liturgy can help us on our journey. These practices are given to us as helpful tools in our tool belts to strengthen our minds and our hearts.

I ask that the next time we are faced with a tough decision that we pray and look within our hearts for the answer.  I believe the more we do this, the more likely we will be to respond to situations with love and compassion.
